Green Cookies

There are certain triggers that can bring you back in time. For me a song from Guns and Roses brings me right back to middle school. A whiff of my daughters Strawberry Shortcake doll brings me back playing with my own doll in elementary school. Food is another one of those triggers that can instantly transport you back to another time and place.

The first one that comes to mind is Holly Berry Cookies. When I was 3 years old I attended nursery school. Right before Christmas we made cookies at school and brought them home along with the recipe. These cookies were such a hit that we have made them every year for the past 29 years. I can remember many years making them side by side with my mother, our fingers stained green from the food coloring. This year I made them with my girls for my 3 year old daughters teacher and told her the story and gave her a copy of the recipe. These cookies are only made at Christmas time and remind me of all of the wonderful Christmas memories of the past.

Holly Berry Cookies (aka Green Cookies) along the lines of rice krispie treats
3 cups of corn flakes
30 large marshmallows
1 stick of butter
green food coloring (enough to make it dark green
red hots candy (2-3 per cookie

Melt butter and marshmallows on low stirring the entire time. Add green food coloring until dark green. Slowly mix in cornflakes. Drop onto wax paper and quickly add red hots before they harden.

I know that my girls look forward to making this treat as much as I do and I hope that they will someday have the same traditions with their children.
